Staying Fit in Retirement

August 8, 2018

Living in a Tx retirement community is a lifelong dream for many people. The scenery is beautiful, the weather allows you to be outdoors year-round and there are so many things to do. To enjoy your retirement fully, you need to stay healthy and fit. Here are some great ways to do so:

  • Stay ahead of the curve. Adopt healthy lifestyle and fitness habits now. Eat a well-balanced diet high in vegetables and legumes and low in saturated fats and sugar. Exercise daily. Include workouts with weights to build muscle.
  • Bounce back from setbacks. Everyone gets sick at times, or experiences injuries or other setbacks. Consult with your doctor and follow his advice. Meanwhile, don’t give up on your healthy habits. For example, if you sprain your ankle you can still most likely do some upper-body exercises to maintain muscle tone. Ease back into your usual fitness routine as soon as you can safely do so.
  • Vary your activities. Choose from gentle aerobic exercises such as walking, biking, swimming, water aerobics or dancing. Changing your activity helps to relieve boredom and keep your body challenged.
  • Find a buddy. Whether it’s your spouse, neighbor or friend, a fitness buddy can make exercising and eating right more enjoyable. Enlist your partner to help you plan and shop for heathy meals, and find a form of exercise you can enjoy together.
  • Work on balance and flexibility. In addition to cardiovascular exercise and weight training, add an activity to improve balance and flexibility. These include yoga, tai chi and Pilates. As you reach your sixties and seventies, try balance-enhancing exercises such as standing on one foot and repeatedly sitting down and getting up from a chair.
  • Keep at it! Modify your routine as needed, but plan on continuing your healthy lifestyle into your 80’s and 90’s. It is still possible to improve your health and fitness at any age!
